Launched in 2024 by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the Florida Green Lodging Program is a statewide initiative that recognizes properties that have gone above and beyond to conserve and protect Florida’s natural resources. It’s a voluntary program that resorts, hotels, motels and bed-and-breakfasts can apply for, and they are granted accreditation if they achieve a certain number of points based on five key areas:
- Communication and education
- Waste reduction, reuse and recycling
- Water conservation
- Energy efficiency
- Indoor air quality
One of Florida’s Top Green Lodging Resorts
Pink Shell Beach Resort & Marina is one of only a handful of resorts in all of Florida to achieve the highest “4 Palm” designation as part of the Florida Green Lodging Program. Over the past several years, the resort has reduced single-use plastics, included furniture made from recycled plastics, added an electric car charging station, installed energy-efficient heat pumps to heat the swimming pools, and added turtle-safe lighting to help sea turtle hatchlings survive their first steps into the water.

Community engagement is also a critical part of environmentally friendly initiatives. Guests are invited to join nature and wildlife programs so they, too, can be empowered to protect the surroundings. Pink Shell Beach Resort & Marina is partnered with several local conservation groups, including Captains for Clean Water, Keep Lee County Beautiful and Coastal Connections.

How can you travel more responsibly on your next vacation?
You’ve probably noticed the placards encouraging you to hang your towels instead of leaving them in a pile, indicating that you’ll skip the laundry service that day. Take advantage of that—an easy, effortless way to reduce energy consumption and water usage.
In-room recycling bins are now the norm in the U.S. Use them and be mindful of rinsing recyclables and separating them properly for maximum benefit.
We know, hotel water pressure is amazing. But it pays to limit your showers (at least sometimes) and turn off taps while brushing your teeth.
Pretend you’re at home! Switch off the lights, turn off the AC and unplug your electronics when you’re not in the room.
